D-I-Y Toothpaste to Cure Tooth Decay

You've visited the dentist and been told the dreaded news that you have tooth decay.  You need a filling!  Or even worse, you need a root canal and a crown!

Never mind the procedure, but the cost alone can be daunting - even with dental insurance.  Can you heal tooth decay yourself?  You sure can...

I never post D-I-Y solutions without trying them out myself first, and this one is no exception.  For this challenge, the guinea pig was my husband who went for his yearly dental checkup and, "gulp," was told he had two teeth with tooth decay and would require immediate fillings.  In panic, he came rushing home and asked for help.  After faithfully following the regimen below, he made a follow-up appointment with the dentist 3 months later.  Not only had he erased any sign of decay, but during his teeth cleaning, the dental hygienist said that his teeth were in fantastic condition and had very little build-up!  When the dentist was told about the regimen, she asked for a copy herself to provide to her clients.

If you've been diagnosed with tooth decay, never fear!  Here's a fantastic solution to help heal those chompers. If you've been told by a dentist that it wasn't possible to cure tooth decay, and that you can only fix cavities with modern dentistry, I'm here to tell you that you can absolutely cure the decay yourself.

Let's first talk about what to do once we have a tooth decay problem, and then go over what we need to do to prevent further decay.  The regimen I use is based on Ramiel Nagel's best seller "Cure Tooth Decay,"(1) which has helped thousands of people naturally cure tooth decay with no dentistry intervention.

"A significant decrease in both plaque and gingivitis was noticed within 7 days of using coconut oil as a daily mouthwash." (2)

Curing Tooth Decay

Healing your teeth is much easier than you think.  It involves a simple recipe for a home made toothpaste, and a different approach to mouth washing.  Curing tooth decay begins with:

  1. Providing your teeth with the building blocks that teeth are made of:  calcium, phosphorous, and trace minerals.
  2. Maintaining a neutral pH in your mouth.
  3. Removing the things that cause plaque and decay to build up in the first place.

The recipe I'm going to give you works for everyone, including those with sensitive teeth like my hubby.  If you have an allergy or reaction to any of the ingredients, then obviously this would not work for you.

Not only is this recipe far superior to any commercially available toothpaste on the market, most of which contain unhealthy chemicals and fluoride (see why you should avoid fluoride), but it's also a big money saver.

The Toothpaste Recipe

All of these ingredients can easily be found in a health food store such as Natural Grocers, Whole Foods, or Earth Fare, or can be purchased online.  The first three ingredients are important, so please don't omit them.  the peppermint is optional, but contributes to oral health and makes the toothpaste taste, well, minty-fresh!

  • Toothpaste consistency5 parts bone meal powder (here's an example on Amazon)
    The building blocks of teeth!
  • 2 parts baking soda
This supports the pH your mouth needs and provides a mild scrub.
  • 5 parts cold-pressed or raw coconut oil
Anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial.  The antibacterial activity has been shown to prevent and heal cavities, and reduce bacteria in the mouth.
  • 2-3 drops peppermint essential oil (or spearmint)
Antibacterial, and a natural breath freshener.

Mix the ingredients together until it reaches a thick, creamy consistency.  If it's not creamy enough, simply add more coconut oil.  When the paste is ready, transfer it into a small airtight jar.  If possible, keep the jar in a warm area in your home because when coconut oil is cold, it hardens and is a little more challenging to dip your toothpaste into.

The Mouthwash Recipe (known as "oil pulling")

The only ingredient you'll need for this is cold-pressed (or raw) coconut oil.  Make sure it is NOT refined as this negates the antibacterial / antimicrobial properties of the oil.

The Regimen

STEP 1: Brush with the Toothpaste

To use the toothpaste, simply moisten your toothbrush, dip it into the jar, and brush your teeth thoroughly.  Do this twice daily.

STEP 2: Follow with the Mouthwash

If you have any tooth decay, do this on a daily basis, otherwise do 2-3 times weekly.

Take 1 tablespoon of the coconut oil and swoosh it around your mouth for 20 mins.  Then, spit it out in the trash (avoid the sink as coconut oil will solidify in the cold and can cause a drain blockage).  That's it!  You don't need to aggressively swoosh the coconut oil around your mouth as you would a commercial mouthwash.  That would be pretty exhausting for 20 mins.  Just gently swirl the mixture, moving it around your mouth every few seconds.

You may think 1 tablespoon is not very much, but it will double in size in your mouth as it mixes with saliva and begins to dissolve toxins on your teeth and in your gums.

Be sure not to swallow the oil.  You are eliminating the toxins, not swallowing them!

HELPFUL TIP:  Coconut oil is normally solid, melting when it's warmed or kept in a warm room.  If it's solid, the moment it enters your mouth, it will begin to liquefy).  If you find it hard to put the solid oil in your mouth, then feel free to warm it up first and then spoon the liquid oil into your mouth.

How Long Will It Take?

The average length of time reported to completely eliminate existing decay is 1 month.  A strengthening of the entire teeth and gum structure is around 3 months.

Hubby followed the regimen for 3 months (which was when his next cleaning was scheduled).  He was more than nervous at his appointment and was fully expecting his two decayed teeth to have turned into root canals.  Instead, not only did he completely eliminate his tooth decay, but his teeth were also stronger and required very little cleaning.  He now uses the toothpaste exclusively, and has reduced the oil pulling to 2-3 times each week.  So far, so good!

Preventing Tooth Decay

When it comes to tooth decay, there are some obvious culprits we need to either cut out, or severely limit in our diet.  Not only are they bad for our teeth in general, but they can cause serious decay issues with teeth and gums:

  • Sugary food and drinks.
  • Artificial foods and ingredients (including artificial colors).
  • Dental procedures (yes, you heard right - dental treatments can destroy tooth enamel, and fillings / root canals permanently damage the integrity of the tooth).
  • Fluoride (a common culprit in commercial toothpaste and some public water systems).

Fluoride is especially dangerous.  Not only does it bind to tooth enamel, making it weak and preventing the calcium and phosphorous from remineralizing teeth, but it has also been directly linked to brain damage and a reduction in IQ.
