Chiropractic as a Career

Chiropractic medicine has become among the most popular of alternative healing degrees. Many chiropractors are in a solo practice, although some work for medical offices or work for other chiropractors. A small number teach, conduct research at chiropractic institutions, or work in hospitals and clinics. Chiropractic offers great career flexibility where hours can be dictated.

Chiropractic Certification & Licensing
Many countries have established guidelines to regulate Chiropractic.

United States: Within the U. S., chiropractors must be licensed by the state board and can only practice in the states where they are licensed. Some States have agreements permitting chiropractors licensed in one state to obtain a license in another without further examination, provided that their educational, examination, and practice credentials meet state specifications.

Within the U.S. and Canada, a minimum of 90 semester hours of undergraduate education are required as a prerequisite for chiropractic school, and at least 4,200 instructional hours (classroom, laboratory, and clinical experience) of full‐time chiropractic education through an accredited chiropractic program. During the first 2 years, most Chiropractic programs emphasize classroom and laboratory work in basic science subjects such as anatomy, physiology, public health, microbiology, pathology, and biochemistry. The last 2 years stress courses in manipulation and spinal adjustment and provide clinical experience in physical and laboratory diagnosis, neurology, orthopedics, geriatrics, physiotherapy, and nutrition.

Upon completion of education, licenses are then given to those who meet the educational requirements of the state and pass a state approved board examination. Most State boards recognize either all or part of a 4-part test administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE).  Some states may supplement the National Board tests, depending on state board requirements. The NBCE is a non-profit organization and the nationally recognized testing agency for the Chiropractic profession.  Established in 1963, it develops, administers, analyzes, scores, and reports national examinations according to established guidelines.  The NBCE scores are among the criteria used by state licensing agencies to determine whether applicants satisfy state qualifications for licensure.

Chiropractic colleges also offer Postdoctoral training in orthopedics, neurology, sports injuries, nutrition, rehabilitation, radiology, industrial consulting, family practice, pediatrics, and applied chiropractic sciences. Once such training is complete, chiropractors may take specialty exams leading to diplomate status in a given specialty. Exams are administered by specialty chiropractic associations.

United Kingdom: Within the U. K., it is considered a criminal offence to practice chiropractic treatments without being registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC).  The GCC was established by parliament to regulate, develop, and promote the Chiropractic profession. This is an independent body established to regulate the profession, to assess each chiropractor's standard of education and competence to practice. As of 14th June 2001 no one may use the title 'Chiropractor' unless they have been assessed by the GCC and are on the Register.

Australia: Within Australia, the Chiropractors Registration Board in each Australian State/Territory is responsible for registering chiropractors.  You must be registered with or obtain a license from a local authority in the state or territory where you want to practice chiropractic:

New South Wales | Victoria | Queensland | South Australia | Tasmania | Northern Territory | Australian Capital Territory | Western Australia

International Recognition: Within the U.S., chiropractic schools are accredited through the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE). Councils in Canada, Australia, and Europe have joined the U. S. to form CCE-International (CCEI) as a model of accreditation standards with the goal of having credentials portable internationally.
